OceanSafe's NANEA Polymer: The First Cradle-to-Cradle Gold-Certified Biodegradable PET Alternative
Berne, Switzerland - January 2025: Swiss-based OceanSafe has made significant strides in sustainable synthetic fibers with its NANEA polymer, a next-generation alternative to PET polyester that is inherently biodegradable in water, soil, and landfill environments. Notably, 93% of NANEA biodegrades in ocean water within just 99 days, making it a game-changer for reducing marine plastic pollution from textile waste.
NANEA has achieved the prestigious Cradle-to-Cradle Gold certification, becoming the first and only synthetic material to meet this rigorous standard to date. Despite being a synthetic polymer, NANEA retains all the favorable processing and performance characteristics of traditional PET, including high durability, scalability, and toxin-free composition. This unique combination of properties makes it suitable for a wide range of textile applications while addressing the environmental concerns associated with conventional synthetic fibers.
OceanSafe has established an extensive network of partners to convert the NANEA polymer into fibers and yarns, paving the way for its commercialization in the fashion and textile industry. As production volumes increase, the company expects the cost of NANEA-based products to become more competitive with traditional PET, further driving adoption. The development of NANEA comes at a time when global fiber consumption is projected to rise from 120 million tons in 2023 to 140 million tons by 2030, highlighting the urgent need for sustainable alternatives to conventional synthetic fibers.
